I'd advise a pregnant woman who was concerned about phthalates to stay away from phthalates-- not because they're actually harmful, but because pregnant women can get really irrational and engage in a lot of magical thinking about their babies. I've been pregnant several times, so I know whereof I speak. No mother wants to feel like she's not doing as much as humanly possible for her unborn baby, so if a pregnant lady gets fixated on blaming one particular thing for any problems that may arise with the pregnancy, religiously avoiding it can give her something to do that will reduce her stress level. If it's not phthalates or BPA or pesticides, it's raising your hands above your head lest the cord get wrapped around the baby's neck, or doing your Kegel exercises. There's always something for an anxious pregnant woman to fixate on; always has been and always will. And today it's phthalates.

Also, without phthalates, what would nervous old biddies on television shows have going for them? Telling us all what we should properly avoid for a better life gives them a purpose. True, it'd be nice if they were capable of putting on their big girl panties and living in the real world of trade-offs with the rest of us, but we really can't expect that everyone will be able to do that, can we?
